Is it all just hype ?
But is it all doom and gloom in 2013 ? Well a leading scientists are still however predicting that the 2013 Solar Flare could be as powerful as the 1859 storm which is known as the ‘Carrington Event’. The Carrington Effect was named after the World reknowned astronomer Richard Carrington, who witnessed first hand the solar flare that electrified transmission cables and in turn set fire to telegraph offices along its path.
A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause $1 to 2 trillion in damages to society’s high-tech infrastructure and require four to ten years for complete recovery. For comparison, Hurricane Katrina caused “only” $80 to 125 billion in damage.
